Dr Maritha van der Walt is currently employed as Chief Medical Officer of Discovery Life ( SA) and Vitality Life (UK). Current responsibilities span the full spectrum of insurance medicine including underwriting, claims assessment, product development, technical marketing, legal aspects and media presentations.
On industry level, she has served on the Medical and Underwriting Standing Committee (MUSC) of the Association of Savings and investments
(ASISA) since 2005 and is currently the convener of this committee. She has a special interest in the insurance aspects of AIDS/HIV as well as Genetic testing.
Maritha obtained the MBChB and MPraxMed (family medicine) degrees from the University of Pretoria, MCom in business management from RAU and a Certificate in Medicine and Law from the University of South Africa. She is Diplomate of the Board of Insurance Medicine under the sponsorship of The American Academy of Insurance Medicine ( AAIM) and has achieved the Certification in Evaluation of Disability and Impairment rating (CEDIR) of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians (AADEP). Currently completing a certificate course on Genetics and Genomics through Stanford University.
