Dr Lauren Acton completed her medical degree at the University of Pretoria in 2006 and obtained a master’s degree in bioethics through the University of Stellenbosch in 2013. She worked as a general practitioner in private practice before joining the insurance industry and has experience in both reinsurance and direct insurance.

Dr Andreas Armuss is a specialist for internal medicine and has been working as a full time Medical Consultant at the Munich Re headquarter in Munich since October 2003. In addition to his work in assessing individual risks in all types of international life insurance, medical research for Life and Health, product development and claims, he has also been involved in developing criteria for medical risk evaluation for the Munich Re manual “MIRA”. Since the 1st of July 2017, Andreas Armuss has taken over the role as Munich Re’s Chief Medical Officer of Life and Health for Australasia, Middle East and Africa, based in Singapore. In this current role he is responsible for all aspects of medical Underwriting, product reviews and claims in Life and Health.

Paul is responsible for guiding FINEOS business operations in Europe, Middle East & Africa. FINEOS is a leading provider of core systems for life, accident and health insurers globally with 7 of the 10 largest group life and health insurers in the US as well as 70% of the Australian group risk market using the FINEOS platform.

He previously held a number of leadership roles, most recently at Munich Re as Executive Vice President, EMEA for its Automation Solutions division. At Munich Re, Paul’s team provided new business processing and underwriting automation solutions to many of the world’s leading and best-known life and health insurers.

He is dedicated to advancing the insurance industry by enhancing efficiency and customer experience.

Dershnee Devan Occupational Therapist with 26 years of clinical experience and a research interest in chronic pain. Postgraduate qualifications include a master’s degree in the field of pain, a Certificate in Pain Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Interdisciplinary Pain Management.
Leadership positions include Honorary Secretary and council member of PainSA (2012- 2021) and past chairperson of the Occupational Therapy Pain Management Group (2019-2022).
Her work experience includes the public, academic and private sectors.
She is currently employed by Hannover Re and runs a return to work programme for long term disability claimants.

More than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry (long-term insurance, retirement funds and investment administration), fulfilling various roles during this time, mostly as (senior) legal adviser on long-term insurance and retirement fund matters, but also as compliance officer to a LISP, company secretary, learning facilitator and in client liaison and managerial roles. 

Joined the office of the Ombudsman for Long-term Insurance in April 2018.

Loraine Oman-Ganes

Loraine Oman-Ganes is a clinical geneticist, pediatrician, and insurance physician who is Vice President, Medical Director at Gen Re. Prior to joining Gen Re, she held several leadership roles, most recently as the Chief Medical Director of Legal & General America, and Global Corporate Chief Medical Director of Sun Life (SL). She created and led the Sun Life Global Medical Team (GMT), comprising physicians in Hong Kong, Manhattan, Montreal and Toronto. Previously, she was Chief Medical Director of RBC Insurance. She completed her B.Sc. (Biology), M.D. and pediatric residency at the University of Saskatchewan, and her fellowship in Clinical Genetics at the University of Michigan. Her diverse genetics experience includes: Clinical Assistant Professor (New York Medical College in Westchester County Medical Center, NY), staff clinical geneticist, North York General Hospital (Toronto), and her own community-based clinical genetics practice in Toronto. She has provided the full range of genetic testing from classical genetics to genomics, including pharmacogenetic testing.

Her diverse, global insurance medicine expertise includes medical support of SL’s Global Innovation Lab, Underwriting and Claims for Life insurance and all Living Benefits products (Group and Individual), Product development, Automated Underwriting, Insurance Risk management, High Cost Drugs, Crisis Management and Pandemic Planning, Collaborative Training/Coaching of diverse teams, and Escalations/Media Threat, and Legal cases. She develops Medical Teams including the LGA Medical Team and SL Global Medical Team as models for medical excellence, collaboration, and catalysts for innovation. Her insurance industry activities include: past President and past Scientific Chair- CLIMOA (Canadian Life Insurance Medical Officers’ Association) and membership in several industry committees including the AAIM Professional and Public Relations Committee and ACLI’s Risk Classification Committee.

Her passions include enhancing collaboration and knowledge sharing between diverse groups, and public education about genetics and science. She was the Chair of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) Information and Education committee, and coordinated several projects including ASHG’s Science Education Summit in Bethesda. She has delivered numerous presentations and interactive workshops in North America for professionals, students at all levels, and the public, and at insurance industry meetings. She was a board member of the Genetic Alliance, which represents over 7 million people with genetic conditions worldwide. She was head judge for six years for the Biotechnology Institute’s Genzyme Life Technologies Biotech Educator Award, which selected the top biotechnology high school teacher in North America. She represented the 8,000 members of ASHG as their sole representative on the Board of Directors of FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology), (Bethesda, MD). She remains an active member of FASEB’s Breakthroughs in Bioscience Committee. She is passionate in her global commitment to mentorship, education, and the belief that genetics can be used as a tool to enhance literacy and health.

Dr. Yaseen Khan the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Essential Medical Guidance (EMGuidance), a leading digital platform for healthcare professionals.

Yaseen is a medical doctor by background with advanced qualifications in Emergency Medicine and Epidemiology.  He previously worked as a General Practitioners and Emergency Room doctor. He became a serial entrepreneur in the medical technology space, and eventually co-founded EMGuidance together with colleague Dr. Mohammed Dalwai in 2016, the company which he leads today.

Marion Morkel has more than 25 years of insurance medicine experience Marion joined Sanlam as Chief Medical Officer in September 2016, after more than a decade at Old Mutual’s Medical Division.

As CMO, her responsibilities cover the application of medical science linked to all products operating under the Sanlam Life license. Marion and her team provide medical expertise to all areas of the businesses under this banner: this includes product development, underwriting, training and development, claims assessment, disability assessment and management, infectious disease management, clinical governance and, medicolegal expert opinion.

Marion has an MBChB and a postgraduate diploma from University of Cape Town, a business qualification from CPUT, and has pursued bioethics studies at the University of Stellenbosch. She is a qualified occupational health doctor and held the Chief Medical Officer position both at CPUT and UCT student services before moving on to insurance medicine.

Mohamed Motala
Mohamed Motala

Mohamed Motala has been a significant contributor to the insurance industry for nearly 30 years. He holds a BCom from Wits and an MBA from GIBS. Joining SCOR in 2008 as the first employee in its South African operations, Mohamed established a subsidiary for SCOR in South Africa in 2009. Over the past 16 years, he has led the Non-Life division of SCOR in South Africa and, in 2024, was appointed CEO, overseeing business across 25 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, Mohamed serves as a Director on the Board of the South African Insurance Association. His curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit have earned him invitations to several global groups within SCOR, including those focused on Digitisation, Client Management, Public-Private Partnerships, Telematics, and new product development in Ecosystem Restoration Insurance. Mohamed is passionate about closing the protection gap, promoting sustainability, and enhancing the industry’s image.

Boitumelo Mothoagae

Prior to joining Liberty, Boitumelo obtained her Bachelor of Public Administration in Industrial Psychology and Public Administration from the University of North West, she followed this with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Cell Biology from WITS University and received her Bachelor of Science honours degree in Medial Cell Biology from Wits University a year later. This led Boitumelo into Science as a profession.

She served as a Senior Laboratory Technician at WITS University until the year 2000 prior to being appointed as an Associate Lecturer. In this role she lectured on various medical and allied medical disciplines, and supervised Science student research projects. She has also conducted her own research in the areas of:

  • Cell biology of cancer of the colon
  • Developmental biology of the gastrointestinal tract.

Her career at Liberty started in 2008 in the position of Financial Advisor, at the Woodmead Branch. She joined the newly formed Retention Team in January 2009 which was responsible for retention of customers following the 2007 financial crisis. From this position, Boitumelo quickly progressed through the ranks initially as a Team Manager position (2009), responsible for the retention of Liberty customers and handling customer queries and complaints, subsequently promoted to Manager (November 2011) of the Customer Management teams which were responsible for the execution of customer initiatives and direct advisory of customers and staff.

She then took up the role of Head of Customer Retention in July 2012, where she managed the department responsible for retaining Liberty customers. Over the years she has been part of the many restructuring efforts of Liberty resulting in her leading the Business Preservation team from July 2017 until she took up the role of Divisional Executive of Claims Management.

Education and personal development are of critical importance to Boitumelo and her educational qualifications in addition include a Certificate in Wealth Management (University of Stellenbosch; 2009) and an Executive Development Programme (WITS University; 2017). She was appointed as a Key Individual in 2012.

Boitumelo has represented Liberty on multiple media platforms as an expert on Wealth Management and financial planning matters and has provided comment for numerous print and online publications in South Africa.

Dave Nicholas

Dave has worked in underwriting for over 35 years. He spent 10 years working for a direct insurer before moving to Gen Re in 1997. He was Chief Underwriter for the UK and Ireland from 2010 to 2018 and Head of Operations from 2018 to 2020. He is now responsible for Underwriting in Canada, UK and Ireland, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean.

Dave is the current Chair of the UK’s Association of British Insurers Genetics Working Group and a past President of the Assurance Medical and Underwriting Society (AMUS).

By intelligently selecting clients for medical tests and streamlining decision-making, predictive underwriting aims to improve client experience while effectively managing risk. Neil Parkin is Head of Business Development for RGA South Africa, responsible for providing RGA clients with the service and support they need to grow. He has been with the company since 2015.

Prior to his current role, Neil was Chief Pricing Actuary, overseeing competitive and accurate risk assessment for retail and group risk business across all classes of life insurance.

Neil is a qualified actuary and a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in London and the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Stikland Hospital and a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, Stellenbosch University. She is responsible for coordinating addiction services for the psychiatric hospitals in the Western Province. She also coordinates pre- and postgraduate training in addiction care at Stellenbosch University, including the Postgraduate diploma in Addiction Care, Certificate in addiction psychiatry and MPhil in Addiction Psychiatry programs.

Shamen is the Claims Manager at Gen Re.  She has been in this role since November 2020 and is based in Cape Town.  She is a qualified Occupational Therapist with 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry.  Prior to joining Gen Re, Shamen worked at a direct insurer and spent 10 years in Claims.  Thereafter, she spent 5 years in product development, assisting with the development of a new-to-market insurance product. She was also responsible for the development of the claims system and processes for this product. Prior to that, Shamen worked as a clinician in the medical sector.

Brice Salence is the Chief Actuary at SCOR SE – Africa Branch, where she is responsible for leading reinsurance pricing for all lines of life insurance business.

With over 17 years of experience, Brice has a deep understanding of the life insurance environment, insurance products, services, and solutions. Notably, Brice is recognized for her involvement in thought leadership research topics, with a recent focus on managing mental health risks within the context of life insurance. This indicates her commitment to addressing emerging issues and challenges in the industry.

Her leadership extends to the Actuarial Society of South Africa, where she chairs the Continuous Statistical Investigations (CSI) Committee. In this role, she leads efforts to gather, process, and interpret information that affects the actuarial profession in South Africa. This work aims to enhance the factual basis for actuarial decision-making, especially concerning contingencies related to life or disability insurance.

Dr John Schoonbee

Dr John Schoonbee qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Cape Town in 1995.  John joined Swiss Re in 2011 and is based in Zurich. He became Swiss Re's Global Chief Medical Officer in 2017 and works with a team of over 15 doctors. In addition to focusing on medical R&D and key global health topics, John initiated a collaboration with The BMJ to host landmark "Food for Thought" events and publications on Nutritional Science. The importance of metabolic health and its impact on NCDs, life expectancy, and the industry's claims experience has become a key focus.

Dr Karneen Tam is Regional Medical Director, Asia Markets for RGA, and based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

She has been supporting functions in the Asia Pacific region as part of the RGA Asia Pacific team since 2019. She previously served as Chief Medical Officer for various insurers and reinsurer in South Africa and has clinical experience in managing diabetes and lifestyle diseases.

Dr Tam received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has also received a Master of Science in diabetes management from the University of South Wales, and a postgraduate diploma in diabetes management form Cardiff University.

The fourth industrial revolution has accelerated the adoption AI technology within the insurance industry. While AI creates opportunities, it also raises risks. Wendy's presentation will provide an overview of the ethical considerations that impact how AI technology should be used in the insurance sector.

John is Head of Underwriting Innovation for Swiss Re based in Zurich, but is also heavily involved in the wider regulatory debate around risk selection at national and international level. He will be sharing his first hand insights of the current focus area of this debate, cancer survivorship, and what we can do in all markets, including Africa, to help steer regulatory intervention towards sustainable outcomes.

Dr. Lize Weich is an addiction psychiatrist at Stikland Hospital and a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry, Stellenbosch University. She is responsible for coordinating addiction services for the psychiatric hospitals in the Western Province. She also coordinates pre- and postgraduate training in addiction care at Stellenbosch University, including the Postgraduate diploma in Addiction Care, Certificate in addiction psychiatry and MPhil in Addiction Psychiatry programs.

Roseanne Harris

Roseanne is Health Policy Actuary and head of Policy and Regulatory Affairs at Discovery Health. She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). She is a past president of the International Actuarial Association and of the Actuarial Society of South Africa.

Roseanne has 30 years of experience in the South African health care and employee benefits field.

Her current role involves industry engagement at a high level including with regulators, government, civil associations, industry bodies and supranationals. She has participated in the Nedlac engagements on National Health Insurance (NHI) as well as presenting evidence and analysis to the Health Market Inquiry (HMI) of the Competition Commission.

She was been a member of the B4SA funding workstream working on the vaccine roll out programme in 2021/22 and a member of the Covid-19 working group of the Actuarial Society of South Africa. Roseanne is project lead of the BUSA/B4SA project on NHI.

Roseanne is a regular presenter at industry events and has published papers on topics including health financing, disease management, social security and ethical decision making.

Dr John O'Brien

Dr O’Brien is a Specialist Physician and Pulmonologist.

He was in academic and private practice at the Chris Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town where he also ran a clinical trial centre. He consulted part time for Gen Re for 5 years before taking up the full-time position as CMO for Life/Health Research and Development based in London and Cologne in June 2016. He is currently a segment chief medical officer and continues to support R&D.

He was born in Zimbabwe did his undergraduate and specialist training at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital. Subspecialty training was at the University of Cape Town and Tufts University, Boston.

He is a past president of the South African Thoracic Society and established the South African Respiratory Journal in 1995 which he edited until 2013. He has been involved in South African guideline development for the treatment of asthma, COPD and community acquired pneumonia and has been a principal investigator in over 70 clinical trials.

I head up Disability Claims and Underwriting at Sanlam Group Risk. With a team of 90+ administrators, assessors and underwriting administrators.  

My background is Occupational Therapy with 20+years in group risk, starting at Old Mutual and then Momentum and a short stint at Swiss Re. I’ve been in a management role for over 10 years. And what I really enjoy about the disability claims process is the impact that it has on people’s lives and the direct input we have towards the growth of the business through sound decisions, service delivery and client engagement. More recently also started dabbling in Product Owner duties, which is doing my people centred personality head-in.

I love what I do; I love my people and I love our clients. Group Risk Disability is life-changing to more than just the claimants whose lives we directly impact. That’s what drives me.

Petro Appelo is a Business Development Actuary at Hannover Re looking after the New Business and Solutions Team. Her life insurance experience includes pricing and product development work as well as developing peripheral solutions that enhance the customer journey.
